This type of surgery provides the surgeon a razor sharp view of the surgical site and enhances his/her ability to perform surgery with minimal damage to tissues leading to less pain and earlier recovery form surgery.
Over the last 20 years Laparoscopic surgery has improved patient care but conventional laparoscopic images are 2-dimensional and the instruments do not articulate (imagine doing a simple task like tying your shoes but can only move your thumbs, not your other fingers nor bend your wrist). Robotic technology enhances laparoscopic surgery by providing 3D high def images for the surgeon and uses highly sophisticated instrumentation that allow for performance of more complex procedures in a minimally invasive way. Dr. Savoca has led the development of robotic colorectal surgery in Northern Virginia by being the busiest in the region and the director of the region’s first robotic training center for surgeons.
